Wreck It, Johar!

Karan Johar’s new comeback film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, has been sweeping the review section off its feet. The movie portrays a feminist view along with the new idea of 87-year-old Kanwal Aur 72-year-old Jamini Kii Prem Kahaani (Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi). The uncanny chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt was a match made in Bollywood, but the older couple were not far behind.

The movie also put forward a new concept of a ‘live-in’ relationship, where they don’t live with each other but with their partner's family. In today’s generation, where love marriages are increasing by the day, this movie encourages being mindful of one’s family’s involvement in the romantic relationship.

“Prior to the release of this film, I felt that at any point in time, I would need an IV drip and was near collapse!! The question I asked myself was, Is it the long 7-year gap? Or the anxiety built over the last three years. Or the fact that we live in an ambiguous box office season. Whatever the real reason, I was a bona fide mess! Unlike many of Karan Johar’s infamous movies, such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Student Of The Year, which are known for their regressive and toxic themes, his new movie was a welcome change. Viewers agree that this movie was a “Good comeback” for Johar after his 7-year break.

Along with the plot, the movie is highly appreciated by the audience for its flamboyant set and costume design. These factors have really brought out the personalities of all the characters in the film and, most importantly, reiterated Karan Johar’s signature as a director. Specifically, the costumes worn by Alia Bhatt might go down as one of the most iconic designs.

While the movie did very well in so many aspects, the audience was disappointed with the music composition. Pritam and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s “Jhumkka” has been trending on Instagram, but all the other songs from the movie did not match the standards of a Karan Johar film.

Every successful film has been criticised in one way or another, but overall, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani is the unique love story that Bollywood fans needed! Karan Johar said in an interview with Anupama Chopra - veteran film journalist and wife of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, that he was surprised by the positive reviews that the film was receiving, but his fans would agree that they were well deserved.
