2014: Stuart Stephen Papworth Parkin is awarded the “Millennium Technology “Prize for his work on magnetic storage

Stuart Stephen Papworth Parkin was born on 9 December 1955 in Watford, England.

He is a well-known experimental Physicist, IBM Fellow and Manager of the Magnetoelectronics group at the IBM Almaden Research Centre in San Jose, California.

He is a pioneer in the Science and Application of Spintronic materials.

Professor Stuart Stephen Papworth Parkin received the 2014 Millennium Technology Prize in recognition for his discoveries, which enabled thousand-fold increase in the storage capacity of the magnetic disk drive. His innovations have led to a huge expansion of data acquisition and storage capacities, which in turn have led to the evolution of large data centres and cloud services, social networks, music and film distribution online. We can now stream movies online, search Information on the internet because all that information is stored in magnetic disk drives in the cloud.
